When you take route 1A North from Boston and arrive at Orient Heights in East Boston, you will see at some point on your right a cross on a hill and at its foot a sign inviting you to visit the Madonna Queen of the Universe Shrine.
If like me you thought that the sanctuary consisted only of this cross, think again; it’s actually located a bit ahead and you can’t see it from the road.
It is an impressively tall monument that overlooks Boston, the airport runways and the coast on that side of the city. In front of the huge statue of the Madonna, a large square intended to receive the faithful. At its end, the panoramic view…
What is surprising is that contrary to what one might think, the church is not at this level but two floors below the square, accessible by entering the buildings on the right.
Nothing extraordinary in its decoration, particularly because there are no stained glass windows, but just before reaching it, you will find a room where are reproduced in miniature imaginary scenes of life of the time of Christ. The sound of animals and craftsmen working, various animations and light effects make the place an unexpected spectacle.
Returning to the square, you can then walk towards the cross which is about 600 yards away but since it is not really accessible, it will be mainly to see all these individual brick houses built in the 1920s-1930s and quite rare in Boston where wood often dominates. Most of them are flanked by a small garden where statues of the Virgin abound and it is all the Italian past of the district which is thus offered to you.
So if you go there and have an hour in front of you, take a detour and if you are also a believer and of the Catholic religion, who knows which of your wishes the Madonna could fulfill?

Quand vous prenez la route 1A vers le nord depuis Boston et arrivez à Orient Heights dans East Boston, vous voyez à un certain moment sur votre droite une croix sur une colline et à ses pieds un panneau vous invitant à visiter le Madonna Queen of the Universe Shrine.
Si comme moi vous pensiez que le sanctuaire consistait uniquement en cette croix, détrompez-vous; il est en fait situé un peu avant et on ne le voit pas depuis la route.
C’est un monument de taille impressionnante qui surplombe Boston, les pistes de l’aéroport et la côte de ce côté là de la ville. Devant l’immense statue de la Madonne, une grande place destinée à recevoir les fidèles. A son extrémité, les vues panoramiques…
Ce qui est étonnant, c’est que contrairement à ce qu’on pourrait penser, l’église n’est pas à ce niveau mais deux étages sous la place, accessible en entrant dans les bâtiments sur la droite.
Rien d’extraordinaire dans sa décoration, particulièrement parce qu’il n’y a pas de vitraux donnant sur l’extérieur mais juste avant d’y accéder, vous trouverez une salle où sont reproduites en miniature des scènes de vie imaginaires de l’époque du Christ. Bruit des animaux et des artisans qui travaillent, animations diverses et jeux de lumière font de l’endroit un spectacle inattendu.
Revenu.e.s sur la place, vous pouvez alors marcher vers la croix qui est à environ 600 mètres mais comme elle n’est pas vraiment accessible, ce sera surtout pour voir toutes ces maisons individuelles en briques construites dans les années 1920-1930 et assez rares à Boston où le bois domine souvent. La plupart sont flanquée d’un petit jardin où abondent les statues de la vierge et c’est tout le passé italien du quartier qui s’offre ainsi à vous.
Si donc vous allez par là et avez une heure devant vous, faites un détour et si en plus vous êtes croyant.e.s et de religion catholique, qui sait lequel de vos souhaits la Madonne pourrait exhauser?
