Governors Island is to the left of the Statue of Liberty as you look out to sea from The Battery Park.
For a long time, the place, military, was off limits but now there are two ferries that run from Manhattan several times a day almost every day.
The fastest, more frequent and easiest departs from the Battery Maritime Building, a small terminal located to the left of the Staten Island Ferry Whitehall Terminal when you are in front of it.
In about 20 minutes and for a very small fee, you are far from the city with great views of the tip of Manhattan.
Most passengers will directly rent bicycles or quadricycles to go around the island, but you can very well do it on foot if you are not in a hurry. You will see the remains of the military buildings, works of art scattered here and there and the sea everywhere.
There are benches, some of which face the Statue of Liberty, quiet places to picnic, and you will almost feel in the countryside with the only motorized vehicles you will see being those of the maintenance staff or the rangers (part of the place is a National Monument).
You will also find places to eat, a school, a spa and with a bit of research, the house where Gorbachev lived when he met Ronald Reagan in 1988, a house which today seems uninhabitable.
A whole part of the island is occupied by an ecological farm and there is a project to develop this activity to make it a research and education center on the climate but for the moment, the nearby pontoons which seem abandoned reinforce the impression that the place is not yet fully developed, oscillating between the disused, the semi-industrial and the recreational park.
In any case and if only for the views of Manhattan and the feeling of being far from the city in the middle of the water and the birds, you should go there.

Governors Island est à gauche de la statue de la Liberté quand vous regardez vers le large depuis The Battery Park.
Pendant longtemps, l’endroit, militaire, a été hors limite mais il y a maintenant deux ferrys qui font la liaison depuis Manhattan plusieurs fois par jour presque tous les jours.
Le plus rapide, fréquent et facile part du Battery Maritime Building, un petit terminal situé à gauche du Staten Island Ferry Whitehall Terminal quand vous êtes en face de lui.
En 20 minutes environ et pour une somme très modique, vous êtes loin de la ville avec de superbes vues sur la pointe de Manhattan.
La plupart des passagers vont directement louer des vélos ou quadricycles pour faire le tour de l’île mais vous pouvez très bien le faire à pied si vous n’êtes pas pressé.e.s. Vous verrez les reste des bâtiments militaires, des oeuvres d’art disséminées ici et là et partout la mer.
Il y a des bancs dont certains font face à la Statue de la Liberté, des endroits tranquilles où pique-niquer, vous vous sentirez presque à la campagne et les seuls véhicules motorisés que vous verrez sont ceux du personnel d’entretien ou des rangers (une partie de l’endroit est un National Monument).
Vous y trouverez aussi des endroits où manger, une école, un spa et avec un peu de recherche, la maison où Gorbatchev a résidé lors de sa rencontre avec Ronald Reagan en 1988, maison qui semble aujourd’hui bien inhabitable.
Toute une partie de l’île est occupée par une ferme écologique et il y a un projet de développer cette activité pour en faire un centre de recherche et d’éducation sur le climat mais pour l’instant, les pontons tout proches qui semblent abandonnés renforcent l’impression que l’endroit n’est pas encore totalement aménagé, oscillant entre le désaffecté, le semi industriel et le parc récréatif.
Dans tous les cas et ne serait-ce que pour les vues sur Manhattan et l’impression d’être loin de la ville au milieu de l’eau et des oiseaux, vous devriez y aller faire un tour.
