Going to listen to Binh means letting yourself be carried away over the hours by interrupted sounds which increase in volume and rhythm as the evening progresses; therefore, it’s difficult to leave because why stop dancing when it’s so pleasant?
The man, however, is imperturbable at his turntables and it is difficult to read what he is thinking in the way he often looks his audience. Sometimes he has half a smile before diving behind the mixing board in search of a rare vinyl in his collection which is said to be impressive. With him, you will not hear what is often done elsewhere and it is an additional pleasure.
So, that evening, he was there for a 4-hour set at the Lower Level in Cambridge, a venue that can accommodate around 200 people and is located in the basement of 55 Bishop Richard Allen Dr.
Nothing indicates it from the outside and you have to follow the building towards the back to find an anonymous door at the bottom of a few steps. The lighting inside is minimalist which adds to the feeling of discovery, as if you were in a place for insiders, which is perhaps the case.
In the first room, a bar with drinks at reasonable prices, a table football and a few tables with chairs. In the second, the darkest, the DJ, rudimentary benches in the back and around the posts supporting the building, and the dance floor. These are not the famous warehouses of Berlin where Binh generally officiates, but it is not far from them either and it does not take more to believe you are in a place at the forefront of music.

Aller écouter Binh, c’est se laisser emporter au fil des heures par des sons interrompus qui augmentent de volume et de rythme au fur et à mesure que la soirée avance; difficile donc de partir en cours de route car pourquoi faudrait-il arrêter de danser quand c’est si agréable?
L’homme pourtant est imperturbable à ses platines et il est difficile de lire ce qu’il pense dans le regard qu’il porte souvent sur son public. Il a parfois un demi-sourire avant de plonger derrière la table de mixage à la recherche d’un vinyl rare dans sa collection qui dit-on est impressionnante. Vous n’entendrez donc pas avec lui ce qui se fait souvent ailleurs et c’est un plaisir supplémentaire.
Il était donc ce soir là pour un set de 4heures au Lower Level à Cambridge, une salle pouvant accueillir environ 200 personnes et située au sous-sol du 55 Bishop Richard Allen Dr.
Rien ne l’indique du dehors et il faut longer le bâtiment vers l’arrière pour trouver une porte anonyme en bas de quelques marches. L’éclairage à l’intérieur est minimaliste ce qui rajoute à l’impression de découverte, comme si vous étiez dans un endroit pour initiés, ce qui est peut-être le cas.
Dans la première salle, un bar avec des consommations à des prix raisonnables, un baby-foot et quelques tables avec des chaises. Dans la deuxième, la plus sombre, le DJ, des banquettes rudimentaires dans le fond et autour des poteaux soutenant l’édifice, et la piste de danse. Ce ne sont pas les entrepos célèbres de Berlin où Binh officie généralement mais ce n’en est pas loin non plus et il n’en faut pas plus pour se croire dans un endroit d’avant-garde musical.
