Concert post punk She Wants Revenge at Brighton Music Hall with D’Arcy and The Chameleons.
D’Arcy is an artist from NYC who claims to be influenced by Nietzsche, Patti Smith and Berlin techno and even though I did not see her because I arrived when she was finishing her show, it already says quite a lot about what post punk gothic rock is. A mix of raw sounds with electro, jazz, dance music.
The Chameleons are a British band from Manchester formed in1981 which is another indication that the genre has been going on for a while. I didn’t particularly want to see them because even though they are post punk, all styles in the genre are not equal and they are slower than She Wants Revenge but they still got me dancing, not enough to knock my jacket off but enough to take my hands out of my pockets.
It was a good start because one of the main reasons people go to this sort of concert is surely to be able to dance surrounded by a crowd that dance too, beside sharing the music and being part of the sound instead of just listening to it.
For that, some bands are better than others and I expected She Wants Revenge to be very good at it based on what I had listened from them. Yet they could be tired or in a bad mood that day, you never know, but they more than assured. Their rythm is fast, their sound and lyrics are somewhat dark and bewitching, their presence is strong even if or perhaps because they don’t move a lot when you’d expect them to jump all the time.
Before they came, there also was that magical time when the change of material takes place and when the sound technicians and other specialists prepare the stage. It raises the tension until things are finally ready, the lights are there but still no one else.
When they arrive at ten o’clock sharp and under applause and shouts – even if, to be exact, they had already come to make the final adjustments, you know the time has come and immediately the atmosphere goes up a notch.
Their show lasted more than an hour and a half, a fairly rare and welcome length of time when everything is fine, and you don’t want it to end -except that if you start to get tired, it allows you to stop too!
The band and the sound are the creation of Justin Warfield, the singer and guitarist, and Adam Bravin, less visible on guitar and keyboards but who was a priori Barack Obama’s personal DJ – although it’s difficult to verify.
The other members come only during the concerts but the drummer holds an essential place as you will be able to hear if you listen to any one of their titles, for example Sister.

Un mélange de sons crus avec de l’électro, du jazz, de la dance music.
The Chameleons est un groupe britannique de Manchester formé en 1981 ce qui est une autre indication que le genre existe depuis un certain temps. Je ne voulais pas spécialement les voir car même s’ils sont post punk, tous les styles du genre ne se valent pas et ils sont plus lents que She Wants Revenge mais ils m’ont tout de même fait danser, pas assez pour faire tomber ma veste mais assez pour sortir les mains de mes poches.
C’était un bon début car l’une des principales raisons pour lesquelles les gens vont dans un concert de ce genre est sans doute de pouvoir danser entouré d’une foule qui danse aussi, en plus de partager la musique et de faire partie du son au lieu de simplement l’écouter.
Pour cela, certains groupes sont meilleurs que d’autres et je m’attendais à ce que She Wants Revenge soit très bon dans ce domaine vu ce que j’avais écouté d’eux. Ceci dit, ils auraient pu être fatigués ou de mauvaise humeur ce jour-là, on ne sait jamais, mais ils ont plus qu’assuré. Leur rythme est rapide, leur son et leurs paroles sont quelque peu sombres et envoûtantes, leur présence est forte même si ou peut-être parce qu’ils ne bougent pas beaucoup alors qu’on s’attendrait à ce qu’ils sautent tout le temps.
Avant leur venue, il y a aussi eu ce moment magique où le changement de matériel s’opère et où les techniciens du son et autres spécialistes préparent la scène. Cela fait monter la tension jusqu’à ce que les choses soient enfin prêtes, les lumières sont là mais toujours personne d’autre.
Quand ils arrivent à dix heures précises et sous les applaudissements et les cris – même si, pour être exact, ils étaient déjà venus faire les derniers réglages, vous savez que le moment est venu et aussitôt l’ambiance monte d’un cran.
Leur concert a duré plus d’une heure et demie, un laps de temps assez rare et bienvenu quand tout va bien et qu’on ne veut pas que ça s’arrête – sauf que si on commence à se fatiguer, ça permet de s’arrêter aussi!
Le groupe et le son sont la création de Justin Warfield, le chanteur et guitariste, et de Adam Bravin, plus effacé à la guitare et aux claviers mais qui fut à priori le DJ personnel de Barack Obama- bien que ce soit difficile à vérifier.
Les autres membres viennent uniquement lors des concerts mais le batteur tient une place essentielle comme vous pourrez le constater si vous écoutez ne serait-ce qu’un de leurs titres, par exemple Sister.
