Mt Auburn Cemetery is a National Historic Landmark. It’s easy to understand why when you enter it, even in the middle of winter when the sky is grey and the temperature low!
Created in 1831, it’s the 1st landscaped cemetery in the nation. You can spend hours there, looking for birds, wildlife, tombs of all sorts and designs. There are large avenues, small paths, hills, ponds. There’s also a whole history of changing attitudes toward death, landscape design, commemoration.
For example, look for the Gateway and the Sphinx inspired by Egypt, the Story and Bigelow Chapels of Middle Age design, the Washington Tower whose “view from the top…is probably not surpassed on this continent” said a writer in 1859.
