Going to the Museum of Contemporary Art in Massachusetts, also know as Mass MoCA, first means going two hours from Boston or three hours from NYC to North Adams in the Bershires, and that’s already an adventure in itself.

Once there, you will find the remains of an old print work factory transformed into exhibition halls in the 1990s.

The buildings are vast, making it one of the largest contemporary art and performance centers in the USA. It has kept its industrial character and it is therefore sometimes a labyrinth of walkways and corridors that reveal the chimneys and warehouse doors of the original site.

All the permanent works and temporary exhibitions are commensurate with the place and you will spend a good two hours seeing everything. You will also have to travel unusual distances to explore everything. The works of Sol LeWitt for exemple occupy 27,000-square-foot and are one of the highlight of the museum that made it famous when it first opened.

Here and there, explanatory panels will tell you about the past of the city and will highlight certain workers and certain contractors who allowed the museum to exist and offered a means of reconversion when the last industrialists owning the buildings – a manufacturer of electric components, put the key under the door.

This museum is also, along with the Clark Institute and the William Collège Museum of Art, one of three major art museums in or around North Adams so if you’re making the trip there, plan to stay a few days especially as there are also many walking trails in the surroundings.

Toutes les œuvres permanentes comme les expositions temporaires sont à la mesure de l’endroit et vous passerez bien deux heures à tout voir. Il vous faudra aussi parcourir des distances inhabituelles pour tout explorer. Les œuvres de Sol LeWitt par exemple occupent 2500 m2 et sont un des incontournables du musée qui le rendirent célèbre quand il ouvrit.

Ici et là, des panneaux explicatifs vous raconteront le passé de la ville et mettront en avant certains ouvriers comme certains entrepreneur qui ont permis au musée d’exister et ont offert un moyen de reconversion quand les derniers industriels possédant les bâtiments -un fabricant ce composants électriques, ont mis la clef sous la porte.

Ce musée est aussi, avec le Clark Institute et le musée d’art de William College, un des trois grands musées d’art à ou autour de North Adams alors si vous faites le trajet jusque là, prévoyez d’y rester quelques jours d’autant plus qu’il y a aussi de nombreux sentiers ce marche dans les environs.
