Built in 1871, Esopus Meadows Lighthouse is now an automated lighthouse warning of the presence of Esopus Meadows, some mud flats in the Hudson River not far from Staatsburg.
Unless you have a boat or kayak, though, you won’t be able to approach it or visit it on the rare occasions it is open to the public.
The best way to see it is to go to the Staatsburg (Mills Mansion) State Historic Site where you’ll find a 65-room, 15-bathroom Beaux-Arts-style mansion and peaceful trails along the river.
Further afield in Hyde Park, two other famous and imposing mansions await you, both National Historic Sites.
All this within a 2 hours drive from New York City or 3 hours and 1/2 from Boston.
In short, a country trip with stunning views and the very special light along the river, light and landscapes that had attracted many painters in the 19th century (those who founded the Hudson River School of Painting).

Construit en 1871, Esopus Meadows Lighthouse est un phare aujourd’hui automatisé qui indique la présence des Prairies d’Esope, des vasières dans la rivière Hudson non loin de Staatsburg.
A moins que vous n’ayez un bateau ou un kayak, vous ne pourrez cependant pas l’approcher ni le visiter les rares fois où il est ouvert au public.
Le mieux pour le voir, c’est d’aller au Staatsburg (Mills Mansion) State Historic Site: vous y trouverez un manoir style Beaux-Arts de 65 pièces et 15 salles de bain et des sentiers paisibles le long de la rivière.
Un peu plus loin à Hyde Park, deux autres manoirs célébres et imposants vous attendent, tous deux des sites historiques nationaux.
Tout cela à 2 heures de route de New York City ou 3 heures 30 de Boston.
En bref, une sortie à la campagne avec des vues superbes et la lumière bien spéciale du long de la rivière, lumière et paysages qui avaient attiré beaucoup de peintres au 19ième siècle (ceux qui ont fondé l’école de peinture de la rivière Hudson).
